Tuition Assistance for Military on the Move
Active duty service members can receive up to $4,500 per fiscal year (October 1 – September 30) through the Department of Defense Tuition Assistance Program. To maximize your benefits, Southwestern College Professional Studies offers a tuition discount for active duty personnel and their spouses, Guard members, Reservists and DOD civilians/contractors.

Top-up Benefits
Extra education dollars are available to those approved for tuition assistance and eligible for MGIB-Active Duty benefits. In some cases, these benefits cover the entire cost of your program.

The Post-9/11 Bill
The Post-9/11 Bill is an educational assistance program that provides up to 36 months of benefits to eligible persons for education and training opportunities pursued after August 1, 2009. These benefits may be used for undergraduate and graduate degree programs, vocational and technical training, tutorial assistance, books, supplies and monthly housing. Generally, benefits are payable for 15 years following release from active duty, and may be transferred to spouses or dependent children.
The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB)
The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) is an assistance program created to attract quality men and women to the Armed Forces. The MGIB program provides up to 36 months of benefits to eligible persons for education and training opportunities. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following release from active duty.
Veterans’ Benefits
A full range of benefits and programs are available to veterans. Southwestern College Professional Studies is approved for veteran educational benefits. To determine your eligibility, call the Veterans Benefits Administration at 1-888-GI-BILL-1 or visit their website www.gibill.va.gov.
Federal Financial Aid

Yellow Ribbon Program
The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program) is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. This program allows institutions of higher learning (degree granting institutions) in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. The institution can contribute up to 50% of those expenses and VA will match the same amount as the institution.

Education Funds Available for Senior Enlisted Sailors
The Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) is seeking applicants for the FY10 Advanced Education Voucher (AEV) program, providing advanced education opportunities for top performing Chief and Senior Chief Petty Officers. The AEV offers financial assistance to selected senior enlisted personnel (E7-E8) to complete postsecondary, Navy-relevant degrees through off-duty education.
The AEV program is a supporting element of the Enlisted Learning and Development Strategy, which includes postsecondary education as an integral part of the career roadmap for each rating career track. ThanksUSA
What will be awarded?
If selected as a recipient of a ThanksUSA scholarship, the learner will receive an award of $3,000 or up to the program costs, whichever is the lesser amount. Awards are not renewable. Students may reapply in subsequent years if ThanksUSA is offering the same scholarship program.
Awards granted to dependent children are for first-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school and are NOT for non-degree licensure/certificate programs or graduate study. Spouses may use the award for a first-time undergraduate degree at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school. Spouses may also use the award for non-degree licensure/certification programs regardless of whether an undergraduate degree has already been completed. Both dependent children and spouses who have completed a vocational program or associate’s degree may use the award for study toward a first time bachelor’s degree. Master’s programs or graduate-level study are not eligible.

AeX-Institution Scholarships
The AeX-Institution Scholarship was established in November 2009 to offer scholarship support to the Military Community and family members. This scholarship is a way for Academic Explorer (AeX) to give back to our men and women in uniform who have served, or currently serve our country, and their families. These scholarships are given in the amount of $1000 for the current academic year in recognition of academic institutions that are currently participating on the AeX platform and publishing a full course catalog of certificate and degree programs.
